Spain Square in Tenerife (Plaza España)

It is the largest square in the city and was built in 1929 where the San Cristóbal castle was located.

It is located between Calle del Castillo and the port, along the Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena. Surrounded by government buildings and other squares, and centered on a giant man-made lake, the square is located directly in the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Admire the backdrop of the plaza and its monument to the fallen soldiers of the Spanish Civil War.

Have a coffee or a drink in one of the abundant cafes, or sit down to eat at one of the surrounding restaurants that serve traditional seafood from the Canary Islands. History buffs can visit an underground exhibit featuring the history and artifacts of the Castillo de San Cristóbal that once stood here.

The square was recently renovated by architects Herzog & de Meuron to include a pond and several pavilions. In front of the square are the offices of the Regional Council of Tenerife.
