The fort, which is today in the shadow of the huge Auditorium building, is one of the oldest attractions in Santa Cruz. It was built on the coast in the mid-17th century to protect the port, famous at the time for the African slave trade, from pirate attacks from the sea. It was named in honor of John the Baptist. The fort's middle name is Castillo Negro.
Every year at the end of July, a representation is made here, restoring the events of 1797, when at the battle of Santa Cruz it was repelled by the British attack led by the legendary admiral Nelson. It was in this battle that he lost his hand.
