Church of the Conception

The Iglesia de la Concepción is the only church in the Canary Islands that has five naves. The church was built on the site of the first chapel built by the Spanish conquerors after the landing in Tenerife. The local population calls this church the "Cathedral of Santa Cruz".

This church is the main one in the island's capital. After all, it is the main temple of the island's capital, and contains the sanctuary of the same name: the cross that laid the foundations of the city.
Architecturally, the temple is considered a mix of Tuscan and Baroque styles.

Next to the church there is a monument to Pope John Paul II, the work of the Czech sculptor Czeslaw Zwigaja, who represented a pontiff blessing two children dressed in traditional Canarian costumes. The monument was brought here from Poland and consecrated by Bishop Bernardo Álvarez Alfonso de Tenerife.
