Plaça del Mercat

The Plaza del Mercado or Plaça del Mercat is a small square located near Foners, near Can Casasayas, in the historic center of Palma de Mallorca.

The square attracts attention with some of the places of interest located both in the square and in its surroundings, where a quieter lively atmosphere is perceived compared to other Spanish cities and islands.

The area of this place with the current name was documented in the 14th century and was probably called that way during the first years of the conquest and during the Muslim rule on the island.

The name of the square is due to the fact that the market of the city was here in the times of the Muslims. In 1302, by the privilege of King Jaime II, the market was officially opened in the square, which was held every Saturday until the 19th century. In 1868 the market was moved to the Plaza Mayor, where it was held on Saturdays, until 1951, when the Mercat de l'Olivar (Olive Market) was built, which still exists today.

Today, Palma's Plaza del Mercado is a small open space with relaxation areas and trees that provide shade and freshness on hot summer days.
Around the square there are historical buildings, as well as cafes with outdoor tables.
