The square is located in the heart of the city in the area of the same name - La Merced. The square is the central place for public festivals, parties and other events.
The square became famous for the house where Pablo Picasso lived, now it houses the Picasso Museum House and the headquarters of the Picasso Foundation.
In the center is the sculpture of General Torichos, the work of Rafael Mithan. The general was famous for his resistance to the absolutism of the monarchy, for which he was shot together with his comrades-in-arms on the beach of San Andrés. By order of the monarch Fernando VII.
The monument is a four-sided obelisk located on a rectangular base in which there is a crypt with the remains of José María Torrijos. The needle is decorated with 48 laurel wreaths to commemorate the 48 people who died with it. On the pedestal are tables with their names and commemorative inscriptions. Interestingly, the upper block was slightly displaced as a result of the earthquake of December 25, 1884. It was not corrected and was left in memory of this historic event in the city.
Today the Plaza de la Merced serves as the public center of the city, hosting all the main festivals, festivals and other folk festivals. The plaza is also a popular meeting place.
There are many open-air cafes, where street musicians often play.
This plaza is also ideal to sit, relax, admire the views and have a good time.
